From a common skincare frustration to a focused, science-led product system.
Seren was created to address one of the most persistent skincare concerns for women of color: hyperpigmentation.
Working alongside board-certified dermatologist Dr. Karen Kagha, I helped transform the idea into a distinctive skincare brand with a clear audience, simplified product system and market-ready identity.
Company: Seren
Founder: Dr. Karen Kagha
Industry: Beauty and Skincare
Scope: Brand Strategy, Product Positioning
The starting point
Hyperpigmentation is common. Effective care can still feel complicated.
Women with melanated skin are frequently told to try long, confusing skincare routines that may not have been formulated with their skin concerns in mind.
Hyperpigmentation can have several causes, but the customer experience often looks the same: too many products, conflicting information and uncertainty about what to use or when to use it.
Dr. Karen Kagha brought the clinical expertise of a board-certified dermatologist. I brought company building, product strategy, brand development and go-to-market experience.
Together, we saw an opportunity to make effective skincare feel clearer and more approachable.
The challenge
Translate dermatological expertise into a brand people could understand
Having an effective product was only one part of the opportunity.
Seren needed to:
- Establish a clear position in a crowded skincare market
- Speak specifically to women with melanated skin
- Make a complex concern feel easier to understand
- Translate clinical credibility into approachable language
- Create a routine customers could follow consistently
- Develop a brand identity that felt elevated and memorable
- Build a launch strategy capable of generating trust and awareness
The goal was not to add more complexity to the customer’s routine.
It was to create a focused system that made skincare feel simpler.
The approach
Make the routine as clear as the promise
The strategy centered on reducing the experience to three essential steps:
Cleanse. Correct. Protect.
This gave Seren a simple product architecture and helped customers understand how every product fit into the routine.
Instead of presenting each product as a disconnected solution, we created a complete system built around consistency, education and daily protection.
What we built
01. Brand positioning
We positioned Seren as a dermatologist-backed skincare line focused on helping women of color address hyperpigmentation.
The brand needed to balance two qualities:
- The authority and trust of dermatologist-developed skincare
- The warmth and beauty of an aspirational consumer brand
This led to Seren’s core positioning:
Where science meets radiance for every hue.
It communicated the brand’s clinical foundation without making the customer experience feel cold or overly medical.
02. The three-step product system
We organized the initial product line around three memorable actions:
Seren Cleanse
The first step in preparing the skin and creating a consistent daily routine.
Seren Correct
The targeted treatment step focused on the appearance of uneven tone and hyperpigmentation.
Seren Protect
The essential daily sunscreen step designed for melanated skin—helping protect the skin while supporting the broader hyperpigmentation routine.
The system gave customers a clear starting point and gave the company a product framework that could support future expansion.
03. Visual identity and logo
I helped develop a brand identity that felt modern, feminine and elevated while remaining grounded in dermatological credibility.
The work included:
- Brand direction
- Logo development
- Color and visual language
- Product naming structure
- Messaging hierarchy
- Packaging direction
- Digital brand presentation
The goal was to ensure Seren could stand confidently alongside established beauty brands while retaining a distinct purpose and audience.
The outcome
A focused brand with a clear place in the market
Seren progressed from an early skincare concept into a cohesive consumer brand with:
- A clearly defined customer
- Dermatologist-backed positioning
- A recognizable brand identity
- A focused three-step skincare system
- A user-friendly e-commerce experience
- Product and packaging direction
- A creator and influencer outreach strategy
- A launch-ready marketing foundation
- A product platform capable of supporting future growth
Most importantly, Seren made a complex skincare concern feel more manageable.
The bigger idea
Skincare should account for who it is serving
For many women of color, sun protection and hyperpigmentation care have historically felt like an afterthought within the broader beauty industry.
Seren was built around a more specific understanding of the customer—her skin concerns, her product experience and her desire for solutions that were both credible and beautiful.
The brand demonstrated that specificity does not limit an idea. It makes the idea stronger.
